Q: What's going on ?

We are aware that bulk mailings are being sent out with our domain name - formicro.co.uk - as part of the return address. Please be assured that these messages are not being sent by us. Some unscrupulous individuals are using it to cover their tracks. Most seem to originate from Korea or China but we have traced others to North and South America.

Q: How do I know it's not from formicro.co.uk ?

You need to check the originating IP address. This is very difficult (but not impossible) to fake. All genuine mail from formicro.co.uk will originate from IP 217.37.48.153 regardless of what SMTP server we use. Just look at the 'properties' of the message and select the 'details' tab.

Q: How do you know that this is happening ?

All the 'undeliverable' or 'bounced' emails end up back in our default mailbox. Some days we get hundreds. We have to check them all in case there are any genuine mis-addressed messages.

Q: So, What are you doing about the problem ?

There's very little that we can do. If we had the money, we could spend millions of pounds trying to find the culprits. Chances are that they would still be out of legal reach.

Q: Why did they pick on your domain ?

Don't know. But we're not alone with this problem. Even some of the big domains have been hit in this way. See linux.org for their experience.
